Question

ACTIVITY: SOLUTION CONCENTRATION VS. CONDUCTIVITY

A chemistry student carried out an experiment with a conducting apparatus (ammeter) similar to the one below. This ammeter measures in milliamperes (mA). The following data was taken.

To 30 mL of the Ba(OH)2 solution, 10 mL portions of H2SO4 were added until a total of 50 mL of H2SO4 were used. The following results were recorded.

DATA TABLE

How does this evidence indicate that the reaction has occurred between ions?

Solution Reading 0.1 M H2SO4 150 mA 0.1 M Ba(OH)2 150 mA Ammeter 6-12 volts Switch Carbon Electrodes Test Solution Conductivity Apparatus

Explanation / Answer

The chemical reaction between strong acid and strong base is

H2SO4 (aq) + Ba(OH)2 (aq) --> BaSO4 (s) + 2 H2O (l)

Barium sulfate is insoluble in water and precipitates out with milky white color.

initially there are only Ba2+ and OH- ions with meter reading 150 mA, when we add sulfuric acid progressively neutralization reaction starts and almost completely un-ionizable barium sulfate and water are formed this decreases meter reading value. Once the reaction completed there is no current reading in meter. After neutralization further addition of acid sulfuric acid, which is responsible for increase in meter reading. (due to H+ ions only and its hydrated form hydronium ions H3O+).

free movement of charged ions are responsible for current meter reading, if there is no ions in solution there will be no current reading.

Hope this helped you!
