Question
Reflect The few basic types of chemical bonds account for the way different materials behave. The expanding field of materials science is using this knowledge to improve the performance of known materials in specific applications, or to develop entirely new compounds. Nanotubes, superconductors, ceramics, alloys, polymers, are just a few examples. Activity Do some research on one material being developed or recently introduced that is used in your work field, or that you find particularly interesting. Present the summary of your findings to the class, making sure your posting contains the following: Why did you choose this particular material? What did you learn from your research? Sources (books, articles, websites) you collected information from.
Explanation / Answer
Nanotube
In chemistry, recent researchs are mainly focusing in the field of Nanochemistry. in Nanochemistry a large number of particular type of materials are developing in every year. nano materials making a new world in scientific field. it also help human to develope and increase theire technology. computer chips, color imaging, aerospace, sensors and pharmacy are the important field of nanoscience, which changed the world.
Nanomaterials means the size of the material is in 10-9 m. The materials are close to the atomic levels, which is the reason behind revolution in this field. nanomaterials are unpredictable properties and ability to control materials at nanosize. The prefix "nano" means one billionth.Just ten hydrogen atoms in a line make up one nanometer. Nanotechnology represents intrdisplinary research and indusrial activities with particles less than 100 nanometer diameter.
nanomaterials are mainly four types based on their size. Zero dimension, one dimension, two dimension and three dimension. we know that in space we use three cartesian coordinates, x-axis, y-axis and z-axis. basedon this, if the nanomaterials all three axis are in nanoscale i.e) less than 100 nm then it is called zero dimensional nanomaterials. example for this is nanoparticles. two diamensions (x and y) are in nanoscale and third one is not then it is called one diensional nanomaterials. example is nanotube, nanowire and nanorodes.if one dimension at nanoscale all other are different then it is called two dimensional nanomaterials. example is nanofilms.three dimensional nanomaterials are those whose dimensions are not in nanoscale. nanotubes are mainly made up of carbons.it is very important class of nanotubes.
carbon nanotubes are cylinders made of graphite sheets with carbon atoms on the apexes of the hexagons. carbon nantubes are forms by folding of garpjite sheets like cylinder is covered by a paper piece. Depending upon their chirality or the way of folding three type carbon nanotubes. zigzag, armchair and helical Carbon nanotubes.
in zigzag carbon nanotubes zig zag arrangement of carbon atoms are present.this are ‘achiral’ tubes i.e. their mirror images are similar as the original structure. armchair carbon nanotubes are armchair structures, these are achiral in nature. helical carbon nanotubes are helical in nature and this tubes are ‘chiral’ and their mirror images appear to differ from their original structure.
