Question

10:59 PM Electrolysis in Aqueous Solutions - Overvoltage Refer to data from a table of standard reduction potentials for common half-reactions and/or the following half- reaction to answer the questions below. | S2082. + 2e, 2SO42- E" 2.01 V During the electrolysis of an aqueous solution of Na2S04, which reaction occurs at the (platinum) anode? 2H2002+4H4e 2H202e H220H ? 2S042--> S2082. + 2e During the electrolysis of water containing 0.01 M sodium sulfate, using platinum electrodes, the overvoltage for the oxidation of water results in: The production of H2(g) and 02(g) in the exact volume

Explanation / Answer

1. a) 2H2O -----> O2 + 4H+ + 4e

Electrolysis of aqueous Na2SO4 produces O2 in anode where water is oxidised and produces H2 in cathode.

2. c) the production of small amount of S2O8 2-

Due to increase in voltage ions of Na2SO4 also start reacting.

3. d) Cl2

Anode attracts negative ion and hence Cl2 is formed in anode.
