Question

Instructor Name: Student Name POST-LAB (EXP #8): Barney ate at the building 10 sandwich shop and is not feeling himself, which causes him to not carefully follow the experimental procedure in part 2. How would the foll deviations in procedure affect the experimental value for the enthalpy of solution? Would it cause the value to be erroneously high, erroneously low, or have no effect? Explain. After weighing it, he unknowingly spills some of the salt on the lab counter and only adds a portion of it to his cup. a. b. He unknowingly spills some of the water in his cup before adding the salt Drinking cold water actually causes your body to body temperature (about 37 °C). If Missy Mae drinks 4 liters of cold (2 °C) water, how many calories will her body supply to heat it to body temperature? (Hint! A food calorie is actually a kilocalorie and the heat capacity of water in calories is 1 cal(g C)) 2. calories as your body warms it to 19 CHE-1251 Experiment&

Explanation / Answer

Enthalpy of solution is the enthalpy change when a salt is dissolved in solvent.

a) Since the student has added only a portion of salt to cup . This means the energy is released by only a portion of salt . So the calculated value will be lesser than the actual value.

b) If some water is already present in the cup before adding salt and after salt he has again added some water then it will not affect the enthalpy of solution because in total the amount of energy released will remain same .
