Question

please help me with redox equation!! Thx a lot!!!

Identify elements whose redox state is changing (e.g O and Fe) so you can separate the overall reaction into oxidation and reduction halves. Then treat the halves separately. In many problems of geochemical interest, there is a metal (e.g.Fe, Cu) in one half and a non-metal (e.g.C, S, O) in the other, but there are also many cases of metal-metal (Fe-Cu, Au-Cu) and non-metal - - non metal reactions (e.g. C-O, O-S). Having identified the redox halves, balance each separately. For example, in a metal - - non-metal reaction: Metal half -reaction: Balance atoms of principle redox metal species, then balance changes with electrons to make a metal half-reaction. Non-metal half-reaction: Balance atoms of the other species (e.g. S), but don't worry about charge (yet). Balance O with H2O. Balance H with H. Balance charge with electrons. Whole reaction: Compare the numbers of electrons in the two half-reactions, then multiply one half reaction by a number such that the electrons will cancel when the two half reactions are added. Add the adjusted half reactions.

Explanation / Answer

hope this example clears your doubt!!

Balance the following redox reaction in an acidic solution:

Cu(s) + HNO3(aq) ? Cu2+(aq) + NO(g)

Solution:

Step 1: Identify what is being oxidized and what is being reduced.

To identify which atoms are being reduced or oxidized, assign oxidation states to each atom of the reaction.
