Question

Golden rice is genetically modified rice that now contains a large amount of A-vitamins. Or more correctly, the rice contains the element beta-carotene which is converted in the human body into vitamin A. so when you eat golden rice, you get more vitamin A. the rice can be considered a particular advantage to poor people in underdeveloped countries. They eat only an extremely limited diet lacking in essential vitamins. The consequences of this restricted diet causes many people to die or become blind. This is particularly true in areas of Asia, where most of the population lives on mostly rice. How would you make golden rice? Discuss how you would clone beta-carotene and how you would introduce it into rice. Assume rice can be infected by Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Also assume beta-carotene is a gene.

Explanation / Answer

Answer:-

Golden rice is a variety of rice produced through genetic engneering to biosynthesize beta-carotene,a precursor of Vitamin A in the edible parts of Rice.

The normal reaction which is exploited in the agrobacterium mode of transfection to produce beta-carotene in Golden Rice technology isbased on simple principle that rice plants possess the whole machniery to synthesize By adding only 2 genes, a plant phytoene synthase and a bacterial -carotene.is based on the simple principle that rice plants possess the whole machinery to synthesise -carotene, and while this machinery is fully active in leaves, parts of it are turned off in the grain. By adding only two genes, a plant phytoene synthase (psy) and a bacterial phytoene desaturase.

The exploited pathway will be:-

IPP

!

GGPP

! Phytoene synthase

Phytoene

! Bacterial Phytoene desaturase

Lycopene

! Lycopene beta cyclase

  beta-carotene

This following pathway helps in the expression of beta-carotene in rice plants. Now when this agrobacterium infects the rice plants then it will multiply inside it and it will get integrated inside the rice genome and ulimately release beta-carotene which is a source for Vitamin A.

Hence this rice is rich in Vitamin A and completes the diets for poor also even if they are taking only rice.
