thank you so much thank you so much NOTE: In this problem, the products of the reaction between Ag and Cu with HNO3 and H2504 are NOT known. gas i s NOT produced. However, this problem can still be solved using the law of conservation of mass. 0.525 g of an alloy (90.0%, AI 100% Cu) is treated in HNO3 and H2SOg to form Ag2SOg and CuSO4 in solution. This solution is excess zinc is added to the remaining solution to precipitate out all the copper (a) (2 points) What mass of silver will be precipitated? then treated with a Cu wire to precipitate all the silver. The solid silver is separated from the mixture and (b) (3 points) What mass of copper will be precipitated? (c) (2 points) What total mass of zinc will dissolve, neglecting any dissolved by excess sulfuric acid? (Avoid unnecessary steps in solving this problem. Page 517

Explanation / Answer

a) Mass of the Ag precipitated in above

In given alloy 90% of Silver is present, so 0.525 grams x 0.90 = 0.4725g

0.47g of Silver produce 0.9504 gm of pricipitated silver.

(1 mole of Ag given 2 mole of Ag precipitate)

b) Mass of the Cu precipitated in above .

In 0.525 g of Alloy copper consists 10% ,there fore 0.525 x 0.10 = 0.0525g

0,0525g copper produce 0.0525 gm of Cu precipitate .

(Because 1 mole of copper is required to produce 1 mole of Copper ppt.)

c) Mass of Zn dissolved

1 mole of Zn is dissloved ( 65 mol wt)
