Question
Form A One of our primary sources of energy is coal and coal trains can be seen traveling across the nation. In 2009 an average Michigan resident used 2.71 x 101 J of energy. If coal supplied all the energy that residents used, how many people's yearly energy consumption could one coal car supply? (13 pts) Lots of potentially useful information: A coal car has average interior dimensions of 47.9 ft for the length, 10.8 ft for width, 8.9 ft for height and a volume of 4603 cubic feet. Coal has a density of 1.86 Ib/liter and 1.00 tons produces 29 GJ of energy. Potentially useful conversions: 1 cm3-1 mL, 2000 lb 1 ton, 2.2 lb 1 kg, 12 in 1 ft, 2.54 cm-1 n, 1 GJ 1x109 JExplanation / Answer
mass of coal = volume * density
volume = 4603 cubic feet = 130342.4 litres
= 4603*130342.4
= 6*10^8 ib
mass in tons = 3*10^5 tons
total energy produced
= 3*10^5 * 29
= 8.7*10^6 GJ or = 8.7*10^15 J
now number of people = total energy / energy used by 1 person
= (8.7*10^15 ) / (2.71*10^11)
= 32103.32
