Add 10 g of cyclohexanol to the ice and mix thoroughly repare a solution by dissolving 10.5 g of Na Cr,0 2H,0 in 10 ml of water and place it in a separatory funnel mounted above the alcohol solution. With a thermometer in the alcohol-acid ixture, add the dichromate solution in small portions with swirling, keeping the temperature tween 27°C and 35°C. The rate of addition is limited by the temperature. The reaction can be bath to permit somewhat faster addition. Excessive cooling should be however, to prevent the possibility of building up an excess of dichromate which can then o rapidly. When all of the dichromate has been added, and the temperature has dropped; be cooled by swirling in an ice avo ided, react to slowly add 1 mL of methanol to reduce any excess dichromate. Transfer the dark green mixture to a 250-ml round-bottom flask and rinse it with about 25 ml of water. Set up the flask for simple distllation with a stopper instead of a thermometer and a graduated cylinder to collect distillate. The water will be enough to complete the co-distillation of the product. Distill the mixture until no more cyclohexanone droplets are present in the condensate (observe the organic layer). After 35 mL has been collected, collect the next few drops in a.small test tube for two layers. If only one layer is obtained stop the distillation. Add about 7.5 g of salt to the distillate to facilitate layer separation and depress the solubility of the cyclohexanone in water. Separate and collect the cyclohexanone using a separatory funnel. Dehydrate the product using enough NazSOs or CaCl2. Decant the product into a dry 50 mL distilling flask. Wash and dry the simple distillation equipment with acetone and distill the cyclohexanone. Collect the product with a boiling range of 153-158°C
