Question
I need help understanding why Ethyl Acetate is used as eluent in TLC. And what would happen if it was much less polar.. I understand that it's carbon oxygen bonds are polar and that it's hydrogen carbon bonds are not polar. so it is polar overall but I am getting stuck understanding why it matters if it is more or less polar in this lab...

TLC use to seperate the two component. This is done by taking a stationar phase ( generally made of silica, a polar molecule) and a mobile phase ( generally sovent). Solvent rises to the coloumn of TLC through capallary action and when it rises ( elutes) it carry the sample also. Now if the sample is polar, it will strongly interact with the silica ( TLC material) and never wiil be seperated. Therefore we use a polar sovent to decrease the interaction between sample and silica ( TLC). This way the sample get seperated.
Now, if we use less poar sovent , it will never be alble to remove the sample from the silica ( as polar sample will strongly bind to silica), and if the solvent is more polar, most of the time it help in seperation. but more polarity of solvent leads to more intercation with silica. hence hard to rise on TLC.
