uilibrium Constant Using Experimental Data auilibrium Constant Using Experimental Det Close Proble Tutored Practice Problem 15.3.2 Use an ICE table to calculate K A mixtare of PCl and Cl is allowed to seact at 509 K The initial concentration of the reactaents are [PC)]-01750 Mand ICa)-199%MAer the spysten reaches equilbrium it i Sound at the Cl concestration ha decreased to 0.0620 M Based on these data, determine the value of the equalibeium constant, K, for this peaction Check & here to search 5 6 8 9 0 e backspa TY U

Explanation / Answer

Solution :-

Lets set up the ICE table for the given reaction

     PCl3(g)    + Cl2(g) ----- > PCl5(g)

I 0.1750 M    0.1990 M           0

C -x                 -x +x

E 0.1750-x      0.0620 M x

Using the equilibrium concentration of the Cl2 we can find the equilibrium concentration of PCl3 and PCl5

Lets calculate the value of x

0.1990 M – x = 0.0620 M

0.1990 M – 0.0620 M= x

0.137 M= x

Equilibrium concentration of PCl3 = 0.1750 M- x

                                                               =0.1750 M-0.137M

                                                                = 0.038 M

Equilibrium concentration of PCl5 = x = 0.137 M

Lets calculate the equilibrium constant using the equilibrium concentrations

K= [PCl5]/[PCl3][Cl2]

K= [0.137 M]/[0.0380 M][0.0620 M]

K= 58.1

Therefore value of equilibrium constant K is 58.1
