Explanation / Answer

1. For Total solids(TS),

TS = (Weight of dish plus dried solids - Weight of dish) *1000/ (sample volume)

[1000 to convert ml to lit]

TS = (85.490-85.337)*1000*1000/85 = 1800 mg/l

[1000 mulity to covert g into mg ]

b. For Total suspended solid (TSS)

TSS = (Weight of filter disk plus dried solids - Weight of disk) *1000/ (sample volume)

TSS = (0.153 - 0.14)*1000*1000/200 = 65 mg/l

c. Total dissolved solids (TDS)

TS = TDS + TSS

Using values from a, b

TDS = 1735 mg/l

d. For volalite solids,

Volalite solids(VS) = 1000* (Weight of dish plus dried solids - Weight of dish plus ignited solids)/ (sample volume) ....Eq.1

% of total = VS/Total quantity *100 .....Eq.2

Fixed solids (FS) = 1000* (Weight of dish plus ignited solids - Weight of dish) *1000/ (sample volume)...Eq.3

% of total = FS/Total quantity *100......Eq.4

Above equation 1 to 4 will be used to calculate volatile and fixed solids of each solid fraction,

For total solids,

VS = (85.490-85.375)*1000*1000/85 = 1352.9 mg/l

% of total = 1352.9 /1800*100 = 75.16%

FS = (85.375-85.337)*1000*1000/85 = 447.05 mg/l

% of total = 447.05/1800*100 = 24.84%

For suspended solids,

VS = (0.153-0.1426)*1000*1000/200 = 52 mg/l

% of total = 52/65*100 = 80 %

FS = (0.1426-0.14)*1000*1000/200 = 13 mg/l

% of total = 13/65*100 = 20 %

For total dissolved solids,

VS for TDS = VS for TS - VS for TSS = 1352.9- 52 = 1300.9 mg/lit

% of total = 1300.9/1735*100 = 74.98 %

FS for TDS = FS for TS - FS for TSS = 447.05 - 13 = 434.05 mg/lit

% of total = 434.05/1735*100 = 25.02 %

total Volatile Fixed mg/l mg/l % of total mg/l % of total Total solids 1800 1352.9 75.16 447.05 24.84 Suspended solids 65 52 80 13 20 Dissolved solids 1735 1300.9 74.98 434.05 25.02
