OCT/NOV 2016 QUESTION 1 In the module PCT3601, you covered the importance of process control, basc concepts of process control, components of a control loop, controller algorithms and process control systems. Using your own words, discuss the importance of process control in a chemical plant [9 marks] QUESTION 2 Process control describes the methods that are used to manipulate process variables when manufacturing a product in a chemical plant. Describe the three (3) basic reasons why chemical engineers exercise control on a production process (12 marksl QUESTION 3 Measurement, comparison and adjustment are the three basic elements found in any control loop Giving examples, briefly discuss what you understand by the following terms encountered in process control loops 3 1 Process vanable 3 2 Set point 3.3 Offset 3 4 Control algorithnm 3 5 Closed and open control loops 3 6 Manual and automatic control 37 ConverterExplanation / Answer
1) Reasons why process control is important:
2) Three basic reasons why chemical engineers exercise process control:
3) Process variable: The variable that is disturbed and hence that has to be monitored
Set point: The desirable value of the process variable with which the comparison is made to generate the error
Offset: The difference between the value of the process variable at set point and steady state or ultimate value.
Comtrol algorithm: The procedure by which the control action is implemented. There are three control algorithms: Feed backward, feed forward and inferential control
Closed and open control loops: Closed loops are control systems where the measured variable is sent back to controller for an control action
Open loop: The measured variable is not sent to the controller (that is there is no feedback to the s/m)
Manual and automatic control: If the pipe or tap of water or a valve is opened by a labour based on controller output is manual control. If the signal is automatically sent from the computer using an actuator to the valve, it is automatic control.
Converter: That which converts the signal from one physical form to another.
