Question

What each test reveals about an unknown halide ion? Suggest another test which would confirm that identity.

1.Addition of Cl2 and CH2Cl2 to an aqueous solution of an unknown halide ion led to a dark CH2Cl2 layer.
2.Addition of 0.1M AgNO3 to another sample of the same halide ion solution generated a light yellow precipitate.
3.Addition of concentrated NH3 to the same halide solution left a cloudy solution
4. Addition of acidic 0.1M NaNO2, 0.5M HNO3 and CH2Cl2 to a unknown halide ion solution resulted in a colorless CH2Cl2 layer

Explanation / Answer

The halide is iodine as it gives pale yellow precipitate with AgNO3 ..The precipitate is AgI.This makes complex WITH CONC NH3 i.e. [Ag(NH3)2]+ WHICH GIVES precipitate

Another test to confirm identity of iodide is addition of conc H2S04..which gives fumes of HI and purple iodine vapours..
