Question
With the introduction of electrons to the Electron Transport Chain, the first molecules in the chain present in NADH dehygrogenase complex, would be __________ when the electron as passed to the next molecule?1. reduced then oxidized
2. dephohphorylated then phosphorylated
3. phosphorylated then decarboxylated
4. oxidized then reduced
Can you please explain why the answer is what it is? I have been trying to use the book and I just cant get it. I have a test coming up and any help would be so greatly appreciated. Will rate best answer for sure......
Explanation / Answer
The NADH would be 4. oxidized then reduced. This is because NADH gives off an e- to the electron transport chain (it is actually giving off a H+ ion which then moves to the intercellular space until brought back down through ATP synthase to produce ATP) making it NAD+. When a molecule such as NADH changes to NAD+ and loses an electron, that means that NADH has been oxidized. An easy way to remember: OIL: Oxidation Is Loss (of an electron) RIG: Reduction Is Gain (of an electron)
