30. If the ‘wear and tear’ theory of aging were true, which situation would occur when muscle stem cells from young animals are placed into old animals and vice versa, allowed to grow new muscle and that muscle challenged to repair wound damage? Assume that only the foreign cells form the new muscle (old cells in young animals and vice versa).
Both young cells in an old body and old cells in a young body would do equally well
The young cells being damage-free would do better than old cells in either body
The old cells would do well in the younger body as it would help them while the young cells would do worse
The result still could not be predicted without experimentation.
31. The experiments in heterochronic (cross-age) transplantation showed that
a. younger stem cell populations flourished when transplanted into old recipients
b. stem cells derived from older donors proliferated faster than young stem cells in a young animal
c. the age of the recipient was more important than the age of the donor in a cross-age transplantation experiment
d. none of the above
32. - 33. What do you conclude from your answers to questions 30 and 31?
I got the answer for 30 and 31. Can you make sure they are correct. What I really need help is in #32-33 question.
Explanation / Answer
What answer you have concluded, the explanation has to be written accordingly.
Now,differentiation and dedifferentiation are the two terms you have to understand,Foreign stem cell when transplanted will only differentiate to muscle cells, So,older cells when placed in younger will have lesser capacity to proliferate due to various changes in oxidative stress, change in methylation pattern, environmental effect. So they have a lesser capacity.Instead younger stem cells will flourish more,as many cells were quiscent in stage and have increased size of telomere.
