Question
9) Balance the following redox reaction in acidic solution. Cr2O7^2-(aq)+Zn(s)?Zn^2+(aq)+Cr^3+(aq)Please show the steps so I can understand.
Explanation / Answer
I am going to use half reaction method to balance the equation. Now reduction half of the reaction is Cr2O7^-2 ----> 2 Cr^+3 to balance the O's i'm adding 7H2O on the RHS => Cr2O7^-2 ----> 2Cr+3 + 7H2O to balance the protons I am adding 14H+ on LHS => Cr2O7-2 + 14H+ ----> 2Cr+3 + 7H2O --(1) Now to balance the charge i am addding 6e- on LHS Cr2O7 -2 + 14H+ + 6e- ----> 2Cr+3 + 7H2O now oxidation half is Zn (s) ---> Zn+2 to balance the charge adding 2 e- s on RHS Zn(s) ---> Zn+2 + 2e- multiplying above equation with 3 and adding to equation 1 gives Cr2O7-2 + 14H+ + 3Zn =====> 2Cr+3 + 7H2O + 3Zn+2
