Question

Answer the questions regarding the equilibrium equation given below.

NH4SH (g) ? NH3 (g) + H2S (g) + heat

How is the Ke affected by a decrease in temperature?

How will the equilibrium shift when pressure is increased?

Explanation / Answer

Temperature: Decreasing temperature will be like removing one of the products. The equilibrium will shift to the right to compensate. Shift right ---> higher numerator in (products/reactants) --> higher Ke. Pressure: There is one molecule of gas reactant to each two molecules of gas product. Increasing the pressure will shift the reaction left as the reaction tries to lower the number of overall molecules (and restore the original pressure). The Ke will decrease.
