Mountains only form where there are tectonic plate collisions at convergent zones. Therefor, mountains can only be formed near plate boundaries because plate collisions happen at plate boundaries.

ectonic plates have formed what we now see as the location of the continents of earth. The plates lie below the earth, making up the crust of the earth. The convection currents flow underneath the plates and cause the plates to move in different directions. The plates can move towards each other which causes destructive formations such as mountains as the two plates collide. They can also move apart. This is what causes ridges and trenches such as the Mariana Trench. This constructive formation can also create volcanos as the magma comes through the gap created by the movement.

Some plates collide against each other. When this happens it results in the two plates pushing upward and creating mountains. The Himalayan Mountains and the Andes Mountains are the results of tectonic plates colliding.
