Question

When the bladder is filled and the micturition reflex is initiated, the nervous supply to the bladder promotes contraction of the bladder and relaxation of the external urethral sphincter, a ring of muscle that keeps the exit from the bladder closed. If the time is inappropriate for bladder emptying when the reflex is initiated, the external urethral sphincter can be voluntarily tightened to prevent urination even though the bladder is contracting:

a) For this situation, speculate on what types of mucle you think bladder and external urethral sphincter are made of? Give reasons

b) What branch of peripheral nervous system supplies each of these muscles? Give Reasons

Explanation / Answer

a) For this kind of situation bladder is made of involuntary muscle while external urethral sphincter is made of voluntary muscles. The reason behind this is that the muscle of external urethral sphincter can be voluntarily contracted or tightened if it is not the appropriate time for the bladder to be emptied.

b) Parasympathetic nervous system supplies to external urethral sphincter because it can be voluntarily controlled while sympathetic nervous system supplies to bladder as it is a part of reflex for urinating.
