Explanation / Answer

1. 2 CH3OH + 3 O2 -> 2 CO2 + 4 H2O The coefficient for oxygen is 1.5. (Not sure about this though.) 2. Standard Atomic Weights: C - 12 H - 1 O - 16 Molecular mass of CH3OH = 34. Therefore 1 mole of methanol (methyl alcohol) weighs 34g, and gives off 727 kJ of heat. Finding how many moles of methanol are in 53g of methanol: 53/34 = 1.56 (3 significant figures). Enthalpy change of combustion of 53g of methanol = 1.56 x 727 kJ = 1134.12 kJ. Source(s): Secondary school chemistry I have learnt. Working out is explained
