Explanation / Answer

1). Cancer results when a cell undergoes uncontrolled cell division, i.e., the cell division processes are not under the control of normal regulatory mechanisms. The main reason behind this uncontrolled division is, mutations in the genes regulating cell growth processes. The conversion of proto oncogenes to “oncogenes” and suppression of “tumour suppressor genes” is the main consequence of these mutations.

For example, in case of breast cancer, two mutated genes, namely BRCA1 and BRCA2 are found and mutations in these genes such as BRCA can be inherited. According to this study, the people with the BRCA1 gene mutation are at greater risk of breast cancer than that of the people with BRCA2 mutation.

2). Both BRCA1 and BRCA2 are tumour suppressor genes that produce tumour suppressor proteins necessary for the normal growth and division of breast cells.

3). Familial association with the other type pf cancers, early onset and bilateral disease are the hallmarks of BRCA associated familial breast cancer.
