The bicarbonate of soda is a catalyst for these reactions. The rotten eggs smell is the formation of H2S hydrogen sulfide which is colorless gas. this is from the breakdown of the sulfur protiens in the chick peas. This in turn reacts with silver ion in solution to give Silver Sulfide Ag2S. A black substance. Sot he silver ions were contaminating the water in the first place to react with the hydrogen sulfide that was produced by the breaking down of the chick peas sulfur protiens.
