Question
You suspect a particular gene (gene z) is responsible for promoting tumor growth in individuals who have high fat diets. Propose a mouse model (GEM) that you would develop to study this. What would the basic outline of your study design be? You will use two mouse diets, a control diet and a high fat diet. Also what are your endpoints?I would think that I would first start out with transgenic mice and have a high fat diet for one group and the control group on a lower fat diet, maybe with the same type of fat like polyunsaturated over the course of a period of time. I just need a little insight on this. Thanks!
Explanation / Answer
In this case two types of experiments can be done.
--At first, two mouse diets with controlled food diet and fat food diet can be used(both grown under similar conditions). We can check the difference between the two, which tells about the effect of diet on tumor induction in fat mice.
--On the other hand, two mouse(with fat diet) are taken and differentiated in the presence of gene Z that is responsible for promoting the tumor growth in high fat diet mice.
The mouse without the gene z is taken as control and the one with Z gene is considered as the experimental organism. The difference in the result gives us information about the relation between tumor induction and gene Z.
