Question
Treatment of optically pure 2-bromobutane with NaOH generates2-butanol through nucleophilic attack by the OH- ion.How would you experimentally determine if this reaction proceedsvia SN1 or SN2 mechanism? Please help, will rate lifesaver for correct answer andexplanation. Thanks! Thanks!Explanation / Answer
if the 2-bromobutane is straight chain compound then thecarbocation formed is stablized therefore it will followSn2 mechanism to form 2-butanol. Since, tertiary carbocation is formed during the reaction which ishighly stablized through hyperco.njugation effect.
