Question

Having trouble with these problems ..

4.) The rectangular loop in the drawing consists of 93 turns and carries a current of I = 3.3 A. A 1.5-T magnetic field is directed along the +y axis. The loop is free to rotate about the z axis. ( = 31°)

(a) Determine the magnitude of the net torque exerted on the loop.N · m
(b) State whether the 31° angle will increase or decrease.

10.) Two long, straight wires are separated by 0.12 m. The wires carry currents of 2.5 A in opposite directions, as the drawing indicates.

(a) Find the magnitude of the net magnetic field at the point A.
(b) Find the magnitude of the net magnetic field at the point B.

Explanation / Answer

3)  the maximum torque the magnetic field can exert on the loop is given by

torque = I A B

I = current = 3.7A
A = area
B = magnetic field = 3.3T

we know the circumference of the loop = 8.20x10-2 m, so its radius is found from

Circumference = 2*pi*r

r = 8.2*10-2 m / 2 *3.14 = 0.013m

the area , A = pi*r2 = 5.30*10-4 m2

then torque = 3.7 A * 5.30*10-4 *3.3T = 64.713*10-4 N-m
