Question
6. You have two long straight wires parallel to each other. The wire A on the left has a current of 8A and is separated from the wire B on the right by 0.1 m carrying a current of 1A. The currents are flowing in the same direction. A point P is .05 m to the right of wire B Draw a picture of the two wires and the point P a) Determine the magnitude of the magnetic field at point P. b) Determine the direction of the magnetic field at point P. c) Determine the magnitude of the force acting on wire B if it is 3 m long d) Determine the direction of the force on wire B. (State direction as elther right, left, up, down, in, or out of the page.)Explanation / Answer
magnetic field due to each wire is B = uo I/2piR
from A, distance of P is 0.1+ 0.05 = 0.15 m
so
B due to A = (4pi *10^-7 * 8)/(2pi* 0.15)
B due to A = 1.06 *10^-5 Tesla
distance of P from wire B is 0.05 m
so
B due to wire B is (4pi *10^-7 * 1)/(2pi* 0.05)
B due to wire B is 0.4 *10^-5 Tesla
Since both Currents are in same direction
net magentic field B = BA+BB
B = 1.06 + 0.4 = 1.46 *10^05 tesla
--------------------------
Directio of magnetic field depends on the direction of Current
if Curent is upwards, B direction is INTO the paper
and if Current is Downwards , B directio is OUT of Paper
--------------------
magnetic force F = i L B
F = uo I1 I2 L/2piR
F = (4pi *10^-7 * 8*1*3)/(2pi* 0.1)
F = 4.8 *10^-5 Newtons
---------------------------------------
direction of force is to the left
