Question
Part A A 5 kg sphere is hung on a 1 meter long string attached to the ceiling. The string is pulled to the right 10.8 cm and the sphere swings back and forth. (Figure 1) The pendulum is released from position 1 as shown in the diagram. Identify the type of energy that the pendulum has at this point. (Figure 2) Choose all that apply. PE, The pendulum has no energy at this location. KE Work Submit Ans Figure 2 of 2 v Part B ldentify the energy that the pendulum has when it reaches point 3 in the diagram (the lowest point along the curved path) Choose all that apply. PE Work KE The pendulum has no energy at this location. 5 kg Submit Request AnswerExplanation / Answer
A) When the pendulam is released from the point 1, its velocity is zero. Hence, the kinetic energy is also zero. So, at this point the pendulam will have only POTENTIAL ENERGY (which is maximum at this point). Since the string is not stretched, the potential energy introduced due to the string is zero. Hence, only the "g" (gravitational acceleration) dependent potential energy i.e the PEg is present here.
B) When the pendulam reaches point 3, its velocity is maximum. Hence, the potential energy is zero here. So, at this point the pendulam will have maximum KINETIC ENERGY, So, the right option is K.E.
