Part A Consider the circuit shown in the figure(Figure 1) Suppose the four resistors in this circuit have the values R1 = 10 , R2=7.6 , R3-8.0 , and R4 = 12 , and that the emf of the battery is E = 15 V Find the current through each resistor using the rules for series and parallel resistors Express your answers using two significant figures separated by commas I 11,12,13, 4 = Submit Request Answer Figure 1 of 1 Part B Find the current through each resistor using Kirchhoffs rules Express your answers using two significant figures separated by commas 11,12,13,14 = Submit Request Answer

Explanation / Answer

a)

R2 and R4 are in series and their combination is given as

R24 = R2 + R4 = 7.6 + 12 = 19.6 ohm

R24 and R3 are in parallel and their combination is given as

R234 = R24 R3 /(R24 + R3) = (19.6) (8)/(19.6 + 8) = 5.7 ohm

R234 and R1 are in series and hence the total resistance is given as

Rtotal = R234 + R1 =5.7 + 10 = 15.7 ohm

i1 = current in R1 = current in R234 =E/Rtotal = 15/15.7 = 0.96 A

V1 = potential difference across R1 = i1 R1 = 0.96 x 10 = 9.6 Volts

V234 = Voltage across R234 = Voltage across R3 = E - V1 = 15 - 9.6 = 5.4 Volts

i3 = current in R3 = V234 /R3 =5.4/8 = 0.675 A

i2 = i4 = i1 - i3 = 0.96 - 0.675 = 0.285 A
