Question

9. Tarzan is on the edge of cliff and Jane is on the edge of hill located in the opposite side and lower than the edge of cliff by 5m. Tarzan want to move to Jane by using a rope whose one end is fixed at a tree just beside Jane and stretched length is l- 20 m long. The masses of Tarzan and Jane is m=80km and m=60kg, respectively, and the gravitational acceleration is g 10m/s (a) Find the speed of Tarzan when he arrives on the edge of hill. (b) When Tarzan arrives on the edge of hill, he releases the rope and collides with Jane and start to roll together. Find the speed of Tarzan and Jane when they start to roll. (c) Find the maximum value of tension exerted on the rope while Tarzan is moving. I1m 772 ,

Explanation / Answer

Initial energy= final energy

So, 80*9.81*5= 0.5*80*v^2

So, speed of tarzan when he arrives on the edge of hill is v= 9.9 m/s

Now, initial momentum= final momentum

So, 9.9*80= v'*(80+60)

So, speed of tarzan and jane when they begin to roll is v'= 5.66m/s

Maximum tension in rope is at the lowest point, where centripetal force + pull against gravity is being provided by the rope.

So, Maximum tension in rope is m*v^2 / l + mg = 1177.2 N
