Question

Please help me fill out this table and Calculate the theoretical yield of Isoamyl acetate

Fill in the mL used of the two starting materials (from the experimental procedure below) and calculate the moles of each species (show your work, include units). NOTE: Since glacial acetic acid contains water, you do not need to calculate the grams of this reagent; simply use the molarity given to calculate the moles of acid used in the procedure. Which will be the limiting reagent, acetic acid or isoamyl alcohol? *Calculate Theoretical yield of Isoamyl acetate in mL, g and moles: (show your work, include units) Moles of isoamyl acetate: Grams of isoamyl acetatc: Volume (mL) of isoamyl acetate:

Explanation / Answer

mass of acetic acid = (1.05x10) = 10.5 gm ( note density is given as 17.4 by mistake , denisty is 1.05 gm/cc from wiki)

moles of acid = 10.5/60.05 = 0.175,

mass of isoamyl alcohol =0.809x5 = 4.045 gm

moles of alcohol =(4.045/88.15) = 0.0459,

isoamyl acetate molar mass = 130.19,

moles of isoamyl acetate = 0.0459 ( since isoamyl alcohol is limiting regant)

mass of acetate =130.19x0.0459 = 5.974 gm = theoretical yield ,

vol of acetate = 5.974/0.876 = 6.82 ml ( 0.876 gm/cc is density of isoamyl acetate)
