Question

The sodium acetate/acetic acid buffer is 0.1 molar in sodium acetate and 0.5 molar in acetic acid. What is the concentration of the buffer?

1.5 molar

0.5 molar

0.1 molar

0.6 molar

0.4 molar

Above is the question with all of the information. I know the answer is not 0.4M or 0.5M. Please work out the problem for me, because I do not understand how to do it with such little information. I know the K and pK of acetic acid are 1.74 x 10^-5 and 4.76, respectively, but I don't know how to use those to solve the problem. Thanks :)

A)

1.5 molar

B)

0.5 molar

C)

0.1 molar

D)

0.6 molar

E)

0.4 molar

Explanation / Answer

concentration of sodium acetate=0.1 M

concentration of acetic acid=0.5 M

so for a buffer , to calculate it's net molarity, we sum up their molarities,

so concentration of the buffer=concentration of the acid + concentration of the salt

=0.1 +0.5

=0.6 M
