Question
Compare and contrast the ways fish, amphibians and turtles survive at subzero temperatures. Do they prevent ice crystal formation? Or allow it? Does extracellular fluid freeze? intracellular? b) What compounds do they make to depress freezing point or to prevent ice formation? c) Which animals let their body partially freeze? How do they survive and what prevents cell lysis? d) Why is this of interest to medical science? Use: text chapter on Ectothermy, powerpoints, readings from "winter World" on moodle and extra readings on moodle. Find at least 1 other reference from scientific journal and provide permalinkExplanation / Answer
In their body during low-temperature ice crystal formation do occur as it grows first on the skin or in the gut and then extends through the large extracellular spaces i.e. between skin and muscle layers, in the lumen of the gut, or inside the abdominal cavity.
They prevent freezing through various ways as follows: -
1) Fishes have anti-freezing proteins viz., glycoprotein to prevent the freezing process by reducing the freezing point of their body fluids.
1) Frogs prevent freezing with the aid of high concentration of glucose in its vital organ like body cavity, bladder and under the skin.
3) As far as turtles are concerned, they prevent freezing as well. First, they stop eating and dig itself into the mud or debris in order to hibernate till the temperature persists or it feels warm.
