A few years ago, ancient DNA was extracted the bones of 63 people who lived in Europe approximately 5000 years ago. The TYR gene was analyzed and it was determined that the allele frequency of the dominant T allele (which produces a large amount of melanin) was 0.96 and the allele frequency of the t allele (which produces a reduced amount of melanin) was 0.04. Assuming that this gene was Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, what was the predicted frequency of homozygous dominant, heterozygous and the homozygous dominant individuals in Europe.

Answer: Frequencies of the homozygous dominant, heterozygous dominant and homozygous recessive are 0.64, 0.32 and 0.04, respectively. (As explained below)

Frequency of tt individuals (q) = square root of q2 = square root of 0.04 = 0.2.

The allele frequency of T is:

p = 1-q = 1- 0.2 = 0.8.

Assuming HWE, genotype frequencies are as follows:

TT = p2 = (0.8)2 = 0.64

Tt = 2pq = 2(0.8)(.2) = 0.32

tt = q2 = (0.2)2 = 0.04
