1. Ammonia- making reaction: N2(g) + 3H2(g) <----> 2NH3(g) This reaction is at Equilibrium with 800 moles of NH3(g), 50 moles of N2(g), and 150 moles of H2(g) in a 1000.00-L container. Calculate the Concentration of each gas and the equilibrium constant.
2. A) Benzoic Acid is a monotropic acid with the formula HC7H5O2 and a Ka of 6.3x10^-5. Write out the reaction equation for the dissociation of this acid in water.
B) Selenous Acid is a diprotic acid with the formula H2SeO3 and two Ka's. Write out the two equations for its dissociation in water.
C) What is the common ion between the formic acid and sodium formate?
D) Why does the formula for sodium formate NOT occur in an ICE chart for dissolving formic acid in a solution of sodium formate?
E) What are the 2 major uses of Henderson-Hasselbach equation? Write it out and explain what each of the terms in it represents.
F) If 0.100 moles of formic acid is dissolved in 1.00L of a solution of 0.200 moles/L sodium formate, NaHCO2, how many moles of the formic acid will dissociate? (ICE first) Ka= 1.8x10^-4
G) What is the pH of the solution in part F?
Explanation / Answer
1)[NH3]=800/1000
=0.8 M
[N2]=50/1000
=0.05 M
[H2]=150/1000
=0.15 M
Kc=[NH3]^2/([H2]^3[N2])
=(0.8^2)/((0.05)*(0.15^3))
=3792.59
2)a) PhCOOH + H2O ---> PhCOO- + H3O+
b)H2SeO3 + H2O ---> HSeO3- + H3O+
HSeO3- + H2O----> SeO3 2- + H3O+
c)it is the formate ion HCOO-
d)since it is the formate ion and not sodium formate as a whole
F)pH=pKa+log(salt/acid)
=3.74+log(0.2/0.1)
=4.04
