Question

Answer all three for full rating!!!!

1. Consider a small lake, 0.4 mile across and 11 ft deep, that contains a total of 50 tons of dissolved oxygen. Calculate the BOD (i.e. calculate the amount of oxygen required to degrade the amount of organic waste given) if 6 tons of carbon-based waste is dumped into the lake. Round your answer to zero places past the decimal.

2. Repeat the BOD calculation as done in #1, but this time let's dump in 60 tons of carbon-based waste. Round your answer to zero places past the decimal.

3.

Explanation / Answer

Each mole of C requires 1 mole of O2 for degradation.

The basic equation involved is : C + O2 -> CO2

Molar mass of C = 12g/mol

Molar mass of O2 = 32 g/mol

(1) tons of oxygen required = 6 tons / (12 g/mol) * (32 g/mol) = 16 tons

(2) tons required = 60/12 * 32 = 160 tons

(3)In the first case there is plenty of oxygen to go around but not enough in the second case.

The BOD in the second case is larger than that in the first case.

In the first case there is a chance that the lake could recover.
Chances are, in the second case the lake will not recover.
