Question

I have a mixture containing the following three compounds: 0.20g o-toluic acid, 0.25g fluorene, 0.05g of 1,4-dibromobenzene. I'm required to separate (any) two of of the three.

In lab we've practiced crystallization and extractions.
Chemicals available for extractions: CH2CL2, 1M NaOH, 1M HCL
Chemicals available for crystallization: ethyl ether, 95% ethanol, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, aceton, hexane, toluene and methylene chloride.
Thanks!

Explanation / Answer

If one use 1M NaOH solution o-toluic acid will form the salt with base and precipitated out as salt., if one use to extracte by only hexane 1,4-dibromo benzene most nonpolar compound among 3 can be extracte only by hexane selectively
