Question

you want to design a breathing machine that will bring 500 mL of air into the lungs. You begin with 100 mL of air at 2 atm of pressure. How would you change the pressure in your machine to accomplish your goal?

Your just got a job in the respiratory department of a large teaching hospital. You notice that the repirators are calibrated in cmH2O instead of atm or mmHg! The conversion chart that came with the new machine states that 1 mmHg = 1.36 cmH2O. How would you set the respirator to deliver a pressure of 80 mmHg?

Get a glass and fill it with cold tap water. Observe the water in the glass as it warms to room temp. What effect does temp have on the amount of gas that can remain dissolved in water?  Can you use this information to  explain boiling?

Explanation / Answer

using P1V1/t1 = P2V2/T2
