Question

Calculate Delta H for the following reaction using Bond Dissociation Energies.  Use Table 4.3 on page 165 to obtain the values for individual bonds.  Use kJ/mol as the units.   If you do not have access to this table I scanned it and placed it as a link on the quiz title page.   If you think the answer is a positive number, type nothing but numerical digits for your answer.  If you think the answer is a negative number, type a minus sign followed by the numerical digits.  Do not leave any space between the minus sign and the number.  DO NOT INCLUDE THE UNITS as part of your answer.

Explanation / Answer

Since table is not given I am giving theory about how to calculate dH of reaction

dH of reaction = BE( reactnats bonds broken) -BE( product bonds formed)

where BE means bond energy hene dH for this reaction is

dH = BE(cyclohexyl C-C of methyl) +BE( H-H) -BE( C-H in cylcohexane)- BE(C-H in CH4)

taking approximate values from web

dH = 350+436-2(410) = -34 KJ/mol
