BACKGROUND: TABLE 6:

Sodium:

-carbonate

-chloride

-hydroxide

-nitrate

-oxalate

-sulfate

2. Suppoose that your laboratory instructor offered you extra credit to anaylze the cations in a solution that your'e told contains only Ba2+ or Ca2+. You are given solutions of the six sodium compounds listed in Table 6, and allowed to divide the unknown solution into two test tubes for testing purposes.

(a) What test would you perform on the solution in the first tube to determine whether or not the solution contains Ba2+? Briefly explain.

(b) What test would your perform on the solution in the second tube to determine whether or not the solution contains Ca2+? Briefly explain.

Explanation / Answer

a)We know that BaSO4 is ppt wile CaSO4 is not........hence we can add sodium sulphate...if a precipetate comes it is barium +2 salt

b)for calcium ion: Ca2+(aq) + 2OH-(aq) ==> Ca(OH)2(s)gives a white precipitate

of calcium hydroxide with sodium hydroxide . hence we can sodium hydroxide to sample to check weather it is Ca+2The barium ion, Ba2+(aq) does not give a hydroxide precipitate because barium hydroxide, Ba(OH)2, is too soluble..
