Question

I'm trying to figure out if the two hydrogens on carbon 4 are equivalent and if the two on carbon 3 are equivalent.

I'm not sure if I am understanding it correctly. I know there is a chiral center on 5. If I replace any of the hydrogens, their respective carbons would be chiral as well. Does this mean they are diastereomers and thus not equivalent? The would they, on an H NMR, show as a dd(doublet of a doublet) for 4? Would then 3 be dddd or a ddt?  I know that homotopic and enantiotopic are the same chemical shift in achiral but different with Diastereotopic.

I'm very confused at how diastereomers are determined. Are the hydrogens on 4 enantiotopic?

Explanation / Answer

yes the hydrogens on carbon 3 and 4 are equivalent ..... as the carbon 5 is an chiral center it may have two forms R or S ...as u havwe a confusion in determinig enantiomers and diastereomers ,the main concept is to find whether the two structures u make is an mirror image or not and if they both are superimposable then it is an enentiomeric and if not it is an dia stereomeric pair ....thanks
