Question

In the picture above, assume that the membrane separating the two sides of the tube contains pores that are big enough for water to pass through, but small enough to prevent starch from passing through. a) There is more solute in the (left or right) side of the tube. b) Based on your answer to part a, you can tell that, relatively speaking, there are more water molecules in the (left or right) side of the tube. c) Based on your answer to part b, you can deduce the water in this tube will... circle your answer. i. move from the left side of the tube towards the right side of the tube. ii. move from the right side of the tube towards the left side of the tube. iii. tend not to move at all. d) If in part c, you said that the water would move, then do you think the water movement would cause the water level to rise indefinitely on one side of the tube? Why or why not? Hypertonic solutions are those with a higher solute concentration as compared to another solution. Hypotonic solutions are those with a lower solute concentration as compare to another solution. If two solutions have equal concentrations of solute, they are considered to be isotonic. a) In the diagram above, the solution would be the one on the (left or right) side of the membrane. b) In the diagram above, the solution would be the one on the (left or right) side of the membrane.

Explanation / Answer

1-

a - Percentage of starch directly reflect the solute composition in the solution.

So on the right side, there is more solute.

b- more the solute in the solution less will the water molecule. so on the left side, there will be more water molecules.

c- water moves from its higher concentration to its lower concentration. On the left side, water has more concentration and on the right side, there is less concentration of water.

So water will move from left side to right side.

d - water molecules will not move indefinitely in the right side solution. it will move up to a point till both sides have equal concentration of starch.

2 a- right-hand side solution is the hyperosmotic solution

b - left-hand side solution is the hypoosmotic solution
