When aluminum metal is added to HCl(aq), H2 gas is produced. When aluminum metal

Question

When aluminum metal is added to HCl(aq), H2 gas is produced. When aluminum metal is added to an aquaeous solution of AgNO3, a reaction occurs, and the aluminum metal disappears and silver metal appears.

When silver metal is added to HCl(aq), no reaction occurs. Likewise, when silver metal is added to an aquaeous solution of Al(NO3)3, no reaction occurs.

Using these experimental observations, devise an activity series for Ag, Al, and H that places the element that most readily loses electrons at the top of the list, and the lelement that least readily loses electrons at the bottom of the list.

So, I know silver will most readily lose electrons, followed by aluminum then hydrogen. But, what is this question asking me to do exactly? Please, any help is appreciated!

Explanation / Answer

aluminum metal is added to HCl(aq), H2 gas is produced

-----------------means Al >H

aluminum metal is added to an aquaeous solution of AgNO3, a reaction occurs, and the aluminum metal disappears and silver metal appears.

----------------means Al >Ag

When silver metal is added to HCl(aq), no reaction occurs.

--------------------means Ag<H

when silver metal is added to an aquaeous solution of Al(NO3)3, no reaction occurs.

----------------means Ag <Al

-----------------------------------------------------------------

hence the activity series is order

Al>H>Ag

The most active metals are at the top of the table; the least active are at the bottom. Each metal is able to displace the elements below it from solution---

Ag when added to Hcl ....it forms AgCl ----so oxidation state changed to 0 to +1-it means loss of electreons....

so the top member readily looses electrons while the bottom members less readily loose electreons
