Question

Provide the following information, show you work.

You notice a change in once species of the fish population in a large pond you are studying. The initial speicies population had mostly Speckled (black and white) fish with smaller but equal numbers of pure Black fish or pure White fish. You counted 50 Speckled fish, 25 pure White fish, and 25 pure Black fish in the population six months ago. All alleles are equally dominant

What are the gene frequencies for the Black allele and the White allele in this original popluation? What kind of gene expression do you think is occuring in the Speckled fish?

Since your last count, black gravel was spread on the bottom of the pond. you recently showed 49 pure Black fish, 42 Speckled fish, and only 9 White fish.

What are the new gene frequencies for this popluation?

What do you think is happening to all the species of fish in the pond? Will the White allele ever disappear?

Explanation / Answer

1. The gene frequencies for black and white alleles in the original population is

Gene frequency of black is 0.25, allele frequency is 0.5

gene frequency of white is 0.25, allele frequency is 0.5

2. The kind of expression seen in the speckled fish would be codominant phenomena where both the alleles are equally dominant to show such phenotype.

3. The population numbers have changed

gene frequency of black is 0.49, allele frequency is 0.7

gene frequency of white is 0.9, allele frequency is 0.3

4. The white fishes in the pond are decreasing as there is a black gravel in the background due to which these fishes are becoming predators due to easy recognition in the pond. During the course of time, the white allele will disappear as on adaptation of the fishes to the black gravel in the pond.
