Question
1/What is the limiting reagent for the banana oil synthesis? and Why
2. What is the purpose of an acid, such as sulfuric acid, in a Fischer esterification reaction( banana oil synthesis)? How does H2SO4affect the reaction equilibrium in banana oil synthesis?
3. In Exp 5 (Preparation of Synthetic Banana Oil), why is there an excess of one of the reagents used? How canyou increase thereaction efficiencyfor the synthesis of banana oil?
4. In the preparation of synthetic banana oil, what gas is evolved during the sodium bicarbonate wash? Show chemical reaction
Explanation / Answer
the banana oil synthesis is combining isopentyl alcohol with acetic acid gives rise to isopentyl acetate(banana oil).
1) In this synthesis the alcohol is the limiting reactant.
2) In this process sulfuric acid acts as a catalyst and it also helps in the removal of water molecule(dehydrating agent). As it acts as a catalyst it does not affect equilibrium.
3) As esterification is equilibrium reaction, one of the reactants is to be taken in excess amount to get good yield of product.
In this synthesis, acetic acid is taken in excess amount to shift equilibrium in forward direction i.e formation of banana oil.
4) CO2 gas is evolved during the sodium bicarbonate wash.
RCOOH + NaHCO3 ------------> RCOONa + H2O + CO2
