Question
Write net equations for the spontaneous redox reactions that occur during the following or none if there is no extensive reaction.
Instructions:
Reactants Rxn: Ox(1) + Red(2) + other -> Red(1) + Ox(2) + other Aluminum metal is added to a ZnSO4 solution Lead metal is placed in hydrochloric acid A gold wire is added to nitric acid Chromium metal is added to water Potassium bromide is dissolved in an acidified solution of KMnO4 Write net equations for the spontaneous redox reactions that occur during the following or none if there is no extensive reaction. Enter all substances in the order listed at the top of the column. Use a carot to indicate a superscript, but do nothing for subscripts. Use a hyphen + greater than (->) for yields. Click on the eye symbol to check your formatting.Explanation / Answer
for alluminum added to a ZnSO4 solution
Al should have 3+ charge. Not 2+.
Zn^2+ + Al -> Zn + Al^3+
2e- + Zn^2+ -> Zn
Al -> Al^3+ + 3e-
Now, to cancel both sides' electrons, we gotta think of least common multiple which is 6.
So, we multiply 3 on the 1st and 2 on the 2nd equation.
(2e- + Zn^2+ -> Zn) * 3
(Al -> Al^3+ + 3e-) * 2
So
6e- + 3 Zn^2+ -> 3Zn
2Al -> 2Al^3+ + 6e-
And we cancel out the electrons on both side and then we combine the 2 equations.
3 Zn^2+ -> 3Zn
2Al -> 2Al^3+
3 Zn^2+ + 2 Al -> 3 Zn + 2 Al^3+
for lead meat placed in HCl
Reduction potential of HCl or just H in this case: 2H1+ + 2e = H2; E=0
Reduction potential of Pb: Pb2+ + 2e1- = Pb; E= -.13
Reduction potential of Pb is lower than H, so list H first.
2H^1+ + Pb -> H2 + Pb^2+
Chromium metal is added to a solution of Mg2+
Does not react
A gold wire is added to nitric acid nothing happens
Potassium bromide is dissolved in an acidified solution of KMnO4
2(MnO4^1- + 8H^1+ + 5e -> Mn^2+ + 4H2O)
5(2Br^1- -> Br2 + 2e)
2MnO4^1- + 10Br^1- + 16H^1+ -> 2Mn^2+ + 5Br2 + 8H20
