Question
Northern Spotted Owl The ranges of two owl species are show in figure 11.15. Assuming these species arose from a common ancestor, do you expect vicariance or dispersal to have been involved in this speciation? Explain your answer in two or three sentences. Which of these two species is most likely to undergo further speciation? Explain your answer in two or three sentences. In a paragraph or two describe the differences between sympatric and allopatric speciation. In another paragraph describe the similarities between these two processes.Explanation / Answer
Que 1.
Ans:
- The northen spotted owl has genotypic and phenotypic differences from its close relative: the mexican spotted owl, which lives in the south.
- The northen spotted owl and mexican spotted owl inhabit geographically seperate locations with different climates and ecosystems.
- The owl is an example of allopatric speciation.
- The further the distance between two groups that once were the same species, the more likely it is that speciation will occur.
- This seems logical because as the distance increases, the various environmental factors would likely have less in common than locations in close proximity.
- Consider the two owls: in the north, climate is cooler than in the south, the types of organisms in each ecosystem differ, as do their behaviour and habitats, also, the hunting habits and prey choices of the southern owls vary from the northen owls.
- These variances can lead to evolved differences in the owls and speciation likely will occur.
Que 2.
Ans:
The differences between sympatric and allopatric speciation:
Allopatric speciation occurs when the population becomes seperated by geographic barries like mountains, rivers etc. Geographical isolation leads to reproductive isolation and speciation. This is the most common form of speciation. In sympatric speciation, the populations are not geographically seperated. This type of speciation is rare and occurs often in plant as self fertilization and polyploidy is common in plants compared to animals.
The similarities bet sympatric and allopatric speciation:
They both are mechanisms by which new species arise. The types of speciation are similar in that they both involve some kind of reproductive barrier. They both are similar that the species ends up becoming reproductively isolated.
