Question

Given the following variance estimates, answer the below questions.

Given the following variance estimates, answer the below questions. Narrow sense heritability for kernel length. Narrow sense heritability for kernel width. Based on the answers above, which trait would be more responsive to selection (e.g., for which trait would selection response be greatest?)? Broad sense heritability for kernel length. Broad sense heritability for kernel width. Based on the answers above (d and e), which trait would be more responsive to selection?

Explanation / Answer

h2 = VA/VP ( Narrow Sense Dominance)

We know that Genetic Variance , Vg is split into two main components i.e

Vg=Va+Vd

where Va= Additive Genetic Variance , Vd=Dominance Genetic Variance

Therefore for Kernel Length , the value of Va = 0.6-0.4=0.2

Therefore for Kernel width , the value of Va = 0.4-0.15 =0.25

Similarly for kernel width , it is = 0.25 /1 = 0.25

Since gain is for kernel width , it is more responsive to selection.

H2 = VG/VP ( Broad sense heritability )

Therefore for kernel length , the value of broad sense dominance is = 0.6/1 =0.6

Similarly for kernel width , it is = 0.4 /1 =0.4

Since gain is for kernel length , it is more responsive to selection.
