Question
Please help me. I get stuck and confused to do my Organic chemistry lab discussion for synthesis of Banana oil. I will give full credit who makes the great discussion. So see the data below attachted in picture.

The table below shows the yield (g), % yield, distillation temperature ( degreeC), and the IR peak for an -OH group for the banana oil synthesis. Both the control group and the experimental group used the same procedure for the banana oil synthesis. The banana oil was produced by mixing 16.0mL of isopentyl alcohol, 17.0mL of glacial acetic acid, and 1.0mL of concentrated sulfuric acid as a catalyst. The experimental group used more than 16.0mL of isopentyl alcohol for their reaction. The reaction was heated under reflux for an hour after the boiling began. The product of the reaction was separated using a separatory funnel. The product was washed first with 50.0mL of water and then with 2 washings with 17mL of 5% sodium bicarbonate. The product was dried using .5g of anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The banana oil was then distilled and was collected. Any liquid that distilled form 137-143 degree C was collected as the final product. An IR was collected to see if an ester was present or if isopentyl alcohol was still present, which would cause a signal at around 3500cm-1.Explanation / Answer
- OH will cause a signal arround 3500cm-1, therefore isopentyl alcohol still present.
