                    In a court case involving the possession of an illegal drug, the prosecution showed that GC analysis of the                     material gave a retention time that match that of a known illegal drug chromatographed under identical conditions. The defense argued that of over one million                     organic compounds, several compounds would be likely to have the same retention time as the drug.                 

                    a. Suggest an analytical procedure for a more certain identification of the substance. (10 marks)                 

                    b. Justify your answer and explain in details of the methods. (10 marks)                 

                    c. Find a journal that reports this situation and write a brief description of the methods                     involved. (20 marks)                 

Explanation / Answer

Answer question retention time in chromatography depends on structure solvent system pressure and temperature conditions .Therefore retention time cannot be taken as criteria to cnfirm the illegal drug. When sample is subjected to GC-MS the mass spectra of the retention time peaks are recorded which gives molucuiar ion peak and break up pattern of the compound which isspecific for a given stucture Sample can also be subjeted to FTIR HPLC HPTLC. All the instruments in the narcotic drug testing laboratories and forensic laboratories are loaded with library . For a given peak if the library gives more than one compound then color tests for each specific drug mentioned for the peak to be carried out
